A man has set his 22-year-old daughter, Faezeh Maleki, on fire and killed her in Sanandaj, Kurdistan province, on 3 October.

A source that spoke to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) said the young woman’s father poured gasoline on her body and burnt her.

The young woman was immediately taken to Kowsar Hospital in Sanandaj.

Reportedly, over 85% of her body was burnt. She lost her life on the morning of 3 October.

So far, the victim’s father has not commented on why he killed his daughter. Their relatives have given several accounts of the incident.

However, Dr Iman Navabi, who treated the young woman and made the incident public in a post on his Instagram account, said the reason was that she “had a boyfriend”.

Faezeh Maleki’s brutal murder has caused widespread reactions, especially on social media.

On 3 October, a group of Kurdish women activists issued a statement in this regard and said: “We, women’s rights activists in Sanandaj, while condemning the murder of women and the phenomenon of honour killing; demand change in discriminatory laws against women’s rights.”

The Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor of Kurdistan province Mohammad Jabbari said, “It is true that this girl is burnt, but it is being investigated whether she burned herself or her father burned her”, reported the International Shia News Agency (Shafaqna), quoting the public relations of the justice department of Kurdistan province.

“So far, no one has filed a complaint regarding the incident”, Jabbari has said.

He also commented on the doctor who first published the news on media and said: “This is a violation of laws, and this person should not have posted it on the internet when nothing has been clarified yet.”
