Kurdistan Human Rights Network

Investigations carried out by the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) show that many Kurdish civilians and activists from Iran have become victims of human rights violations in June 2022.

The followings are the detailed information collected by the KHRN statistics and documentation centre regarding these violations.

Executions

In June, Iran executed at least 12 prisoners in Ilam, Kermanshah, Orumiyeh, and Karaj.

These included eight prisoners who were executed for “premeditated murder” and three over drug-related charges.

Also, Kurdish Political prisoner Firouz Musalou was secretly executed in Orumiyeh Central Prison over membership in the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). He was charged with “armed insurrection” (baghi).

Also on June 29, Kurdish political prisoner Shaker Behrouz was transferred to an undisclosed location for execution. However, after the plaintiff family withdrew their complaint, he was sent back to prison.

These are the cases on which the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has been informed through its sources. But the number of those executed is likely to be higher.

Femicide

On 8 June, a man killed his wife due to a “family dispute” in Sanandaj, Kurdistan province.

Kolbars and tradesmen

In June, at least 13 kolbars were injured by Iranian border forces. Of these, 12 were shot and one was beaten.

Also, Iranian military forces in the border areas killed and wounded two tradesmen from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Also, an Iranian border officer shot and injured a Kurdish tradesman inside the yard of the Bazargan customs office, in West Azerbaijan province, after a verbal argument between the two.

In addition, two young tradesmen named Milad Karimi, 18, and Pouya Mohammad-Azizian, 16, lost their lives as a fuel depot caught fire in the border village of Hani Garmaleh in the Nowsud district of Kermanshah province, western Iran.

Landmine explosions

In the past month, landmine blasts killed one civilian and injured another in Iranian Kurdistan.

Workers’ accidents

At least six workers from Iranian Kurdistan died in work accidents throughout June.

While four of these cases occurred in Orumiyeh and Sanandaj, two workers lost their lives in Erbil and Sulaimaniyah in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Detentions and arrests

Throughout June, Iranian forces detained at least 61 people in Iranian Kurdistan, including 39 teachers’ union activists.

At least five of these people were jailed to serve prison sentences.

Most of the arrested people are labour union activists and teachers who were detained by the security forces in connection with the protest rallies of workers and teachers.

Security institutions in different cities of Iranian Kurdistan summoned and interrogated a large number of workers and teachers for organising or participating in protest rallies.

Prison sentences

On 21 June, an Iranian court sentenced a Yarsani activist named Kheyrollah Haghjouyan to one month in jail and an 11-month suspended prison sentence.

The court charged the activist with “propaganda against the state” and “insulting sanctities”.
