Today, Iran released a Kurdish political prisoner named Khaled Fereydouni under judiciary amnesty.
The political prisoner was released from Orumiyeh Central Prison after serving 22 years.
He spent his imprisonment in Mahabad, West Azerbaijan province; Rajai Shahr Prison of Karaj, Alborz province; and Orumiyeh, West Azerbaijan province.
Fereydouni was sent on temporary leave for the first time in January the 21st year of his imprisonment.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) arrested Fereydouni, along with Omar Faqihpour, in one of the villages of Piranshahr in West Azerbaijan province, on 31 August 2000.
The Islamic Revolutionary Court of Mahabad sentenced the two to the death penalty on charges of “enmity against God” (moharebeh).
In 2005, the Court of Appeals of West Azerbaijan province commuted their death penalties to life sentences.
In 2004, the two political prisoners were internally exiled to Orumiyeh Central Prison.
In 2007 they were transferred to serve nearly 10 years in Rajai Shahr Prison.
In 2014, the prisoners were returned to Orumiyeh Central Prison.
Earlier, in April 2021, Faqihpour was released from Orumiyeh Central Prison under judiciary amnesty after serving more than 20 years.
