A man stabbed and killed his wife in Sanandaj, Kurdistan province, on 15 October.

Leila Shakiba, 39, was a mother of two and a resident of Hamedan.

“Leila and her husband have had problems for years. Her husband had repeatedly been threatening her with murder. However, she still preferred to live together for the sake of her children”, a women’s rights activist in Sanandaj told the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN), quoting a relative of Leila.

Police arrested Shakiba’s husband, B. Bakhtiari, after the murder.

He described his motive for the murder as “family disputes”.

Shakiba is the 18th Kurdish woman to be killed by a male family member for the past half a year.
