Iranian security forces have tortured Kurdish civilian Danial Ahmadi after he was arrested by the Turkish police upon his entry to Turkey and handed over to Iranian border guards on 24 November 2022, Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned.
Ahmadi entered Turkey with the intention of immigrating to Europe and was arrested by the police near the city of Van, in western Turkey.
After several hours of severe beatings, he was handed over to Iran’s border guards.
The civilian was then severely beaten by military officers at the detention facility of Khoy Border Regiment, in north-western Iran, and then transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention centre in the city the next day.
After two days of interrogation, Ahmadi was taken to Khoy Prison and, after a few hours, to a security detention centre in Orumiyeh, West Azerbaijan province, where he was severely tortured for forced confessions for two weeks.
The civilian was then taken to a hospital in Orumiyeh due to losing consciousness and a head fracture caused by baton blows. He was taken back to Khoy prison before receiving proper treatment.
After a month of detention in Khoy Prison, Ahmadi was transferred to Bukan prison and released on a bail of 2 billion Tomans – nearly 40,000 USD – in February.
During this time, he was denied the right to legal counsel and family visits.
The civilian’s case is being investigated on charges of “crossing unauthorized or prohibited borders” at Branch 102 of the Criminal Court of Khoy and “disrupting the public order and peace” at Branch One of the Bukan’s Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office.
