Fardin and Farhad Aghazadeh, two brothers imprisoned in Orumiyeh Central Prison, have attempted suicide after being tortured by prison officials and placed in solitary confinement, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned.

The brothers, who were arrested for fighting and sentenced to prison and fines, used sharp objects in their suicide attempt on 18 October and were transferred to the prison infirmary.

KHRN has learned that the incident occurred after a verbal altercation between the brothers and a ward supervisor during the morning roll call in Ward 2 of the prison on 17 October. Mohammad Fatemi, the prison’s internal manager, along with Ward 2 supervisor Akbar Maheri and two guards identified as Sina Sogoli and Babaei, beat the brothers with batons.

Following the beating, the Aghazadeh brothers were placed in solitary confinement, where they attempted to end their lives a day later.

The brothers have been detained for around eight months.
