Security forces today arrested former Kurdish political prisoner Afshin Hossein-Panahi in Sanandaj, Kurdistan Province, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned.

He was arrested without a warrant at his workplace and security agents then raided and searched his home in Sanandaj.

Hossein-Panahi is the brother of Ramin Hossein-Panahi, a Kurdish political prisoner who was executed in 2018.

The former political prisoner was reportedly summoned by telephone to the Ministry of Intelligence in Sanandaj in recent days.

The charges against Hossein-Panahi and his current whereabouts remain unknown.

Hossein-Panahi was previously arrested by security forces on 26 June 2017, three days after the arrest of his brother Ramin.

In November 2017, Branch One of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Sanandaj, presided over by Judge Saeidi, sentenced him to a total of eight years and six months in prison on charges of “propaganda against the state” for participating in Newroz celebrations and “collaboration and membership in opposition groups”.

He was released on parole in May 2020 after serving almost three years of his sentence in Sanandaj Central Prison.

Ramin Hossein-Panahi, his brother, was executed on 8 September 2018 in Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj, Alborz Province.
