Hamed Geravand, a prisoner from Kuhdasht, Lorestan Province, has died by suicide after his request for prison leave was rejected in Gheymas Prison in Mahidasht, Kermanshah Province.
Geravand, 34, ended his life by taking an overdose of pills on 27 April.
On 27 April, Geravand met with a deputy prosecutor in Kermanshah’s judiciary, identified as Eini, to discuss the possibility of another period of leave.
However, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned that he was insulted and treated disrespectfully by the official, and after the meeting, he took dozens of pills in protest at the behaviour he faced and the decision to deny his leave request.
His body was taken to the Kermanshah Forensic Medicine Department before being released to his family.
Geravand, from Sar Tarhan, Kuhdasht, was arrested in Tehran several years ago on drug-related charges and sentenced to 26 years in prison.
His sentence was later reduced to 13 years by the Supreme Court and he was transferred to Gheymas Prison in Mahidasht at his own request.
During his imprisonment, he was granted several periods of leave, but his access to leave was recently suspended for reasons that remain unclear.
