Kurdish activists Amjad Geryakhiz and Ghaneh Khateri were sent to Sanandaj Central Prison on 7 July to begin serving sentences issued by the Islamic Revolutionary Court.
Labour rights activist Geryakhiz was sentenced by Branch One of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Sanandaj, Kurdistan Province, to six months in prison on charges of “propaganda against the state” and “inciting shopkeepers to strike”.
The court had also sentenced him to two years of suspended imprisonment.
Geryakhiz, from Sanandaj, was arrested on 22 January by Ministry of Intelligence agents in Sanandaj following strikes and protests sparked by the death sentences issued for Kurdish political prisoners Pakhshan Azizi and Verisheh Moradi (Wirishe Moradi).
He was detained for several weeks at a Ministry of Intelligence facility before being transferred to Sanandaj Central Prison and released on bail on 25 February.
Meanwhile, civil rights activist Khateri, who had been convicted by the same court—presided over by Judge Mostafa Azizi—of “propaganda against the state”, was also imprisoned to serve an eight-month sentence.
He was arrested by security forces on 6 February, interrogated for several days in Ministry of Intelligence custody, and then transferred to Sanandaj Central Prison.
On 20 February, he was provisionally released on bail of five billion rials (nearly 5,500 USD), pending the outcome of his trial.
