Hamid Chapati, a Kurdish civil rights activist from Orumiyeh, West Azerbaijan Province, has been sent to the city’s central prison to serve a six-month sentence on charges of “propaganda against the state”.
He was previously summoned to the Enforcement of Judgments Office of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in Orumiyeh to begin his term, and was transferred to Orumiyeh Central Prison today.
Chapati was first detained on 16 October 2024, having received a telephone summons from the Public Security Police in Orumiyeh. He was released on temporary bail the same day after being charged.
On 14 February 2025, Branch Two of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Orumiyeh, presided over by Judge Shahini, sentenced him to three months in prison on charges of “propaganda against the state”.
However, the Deputy Prosecutor of Orumiyeh, Behzad Sarikhanlou, appealed the verdict, and the case was then referred to Branch 23 of the Provincial Court of Appeal, which subsequently increased the sentence to six months.
