Leila Alirmaei, a 42-year-old woman, was shot dead by her neighbour in Marivan, Kurdistan Province, after refusing his repeated demands to divorce her husband and marry him.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned that on 26 October, a man identified as Keyvan Basami opened fire on Alirmaei with a Kalashnikov rifle outside her workplace in the Hejrat (Joujehsazi) neighbourhood of Marivan, killing her instantly.
The attack took place in front of a nearby school, where many students witnessed the killing.
According to a source familiar with the case, the perpetrator, who lived next door to Alirmaei’s family, had persistently urged her to divorce her husband so he could marry her. When she refused, he fatally shot her.
Alirmaei was married and had two children.
Basami, a member of the Basij, a paramilitary force under the control of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), is reported to have a record of repeated and severe violence against both his former and current wives. His first wife is said to have divorced him due to ongoing abuse.
