Leyla Azari, a 39-year-old mother of one child, has been killed by her former husband in Bukan, West Azerbaijan Province, after she refused to reconcile with him.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned that Azari, originally from the village of Aq Tappeh village in Shahin Dezh, West Azerbaijan Province, was murdered on 6 December after her husband struck her on the head with a stone.
Her body was later found in the village of Kani Allah Seyedeh in Bukan, West Azerbaijan Province.
A source familiar with the case spoke to KHRN and said: “Leyla separated from her husband two years ago because he remarried. During this period, her former husband repeatedly used threats and violence to force her to return to the marriage, but even after he separated from his second wife, Leyla still refused to go back.”
Police arrested the suspect shortly after the killing, and he has reportedly confessed.
Azari, who worked in a restaurant to provide for herself and her young daughter, had been the child’s primary caregiver since the divorce.
