Vahid Omari, a Kurdish prisoner held at Salmas Prison in West Azerbaijan Province, died due to the prison authorities’ failure to provide timely medical treatment.
A source who spoke to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN), said: “The prisoner, who was from the village of Khorkhoreh in Salmas, was arrested some time ago on charges relating to financial offences and was being held at Salmas Prison. On Thursday, 18 December 2025, he suffered a stroke in the prison, but died due to delays in transferring him to hospital.”
According to the source, his family has so far refused to accept his body, stating that he died because of inadequate medical care, and is seeking to file a complaint against prison authorities.
This marks the second death of a Kurdish prisoner within the past week due to a lack of medical care. Just days earlier, on 14 December 2025, Abdolhadi Sheikhehpour, a prisoner from Sardasht, died in Mahabad Prison after being denied access to medical care.
