Abbas Zarei, a 40-year-old prisoner from Kermanshah, Kermanshah Province, was executed at dawn on 9 June in Kermanshah Central Prison (Dizel Abad Prison).
Zarei was sentenced to qisas, or retribution in kind, for “premeditated murder”.
Under Iran’s Islamic law, premeditated murder is punishable by qisas, or retribution in kind, which gives the victim’s family the right to demand the offender’s execution or to grant clemency in exchange for financial compensation, known as diya, or blood money.
He was the father of one child and came from the village of Sarin, in the Firuzabad district of Kermanshah County.
Following a murder in 2018, Zarei lived in hiding until he was arrested in 2024, and later sentenced to death.
