The Islamic Revolutionary Court in Orumiyeh, West Azerbaijan Province, has sentenced at least 12 people detained during the January 2026 protests to prison terms, with some of the terms suspended.
Those still held in Orumiyeh Central Prison have in recent days been transferred from the prison’s reception ward to the ward for political and religious prisoners.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has so far obtained details of five Kurdish citizens from Orumiyeh who were among those detained on 8 January during the protests and later sentenced on the charge of “acting against national security”.
Karim Masoudi was arrested by security forces and was held for a period at the Doghuz Pelleh detention facility run by the Public Security Police in Orumiyeh before being transferred to Orumiyeh Central Prison.
Branch Three of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Orumiyeh, presided over by Judge Mahmoudi, sentenced Masoudi to two years’ imprisonment, with 18 months suspended.
Behzad Samadzadeh was arrested by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence and was interrogated at the security body’s detention facility in Orumiyeh before being transferred to Orumiyeh Central Prison.
Branch One of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Orumiyeh, presided over by Judge Dousti, sentenced Samadzadeh to two years’ imprisonment, with 18 months suspended.
Farshad Souri was arrested by police forces and was held at the Doghuz Pelleh detention facility run by the Public Security Police in Orumiyeh before his transfer to Orumiyeh Central Prison.
Branch One of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Orumiyeh sentenced him to one year’s imprisonment on the charge of “acting against national security”. Following his request to accept the verdict, his sentence was reduced to nine months’ imprisonment.
Gholam-Reza Abdollahzadeh and Sardar Pourmirzaei were arrested by agents of the Intelligence Organisation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and were held at the security body’s detention centre before being transferred to Orumiyeh Central Prison.
The two were tried in recent weeks by a branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Orumiyeh on the charge of “acting against national security”.
Abdollahzadeh received a one-year prison sentence, later reduced to nine months following his request to accept the verdict.
Pourmirzaei was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, with 17 months of the sentence suspended.
Several months after security forces detained dozens of people during the 8 January 2026 protests in Orumiyeh, some detainees remain held in the prison’s reception ward without clarity over their legal status.
