Iran’s judicial authorities have extended for a month the detention of Kajal Rahmani, her husband Isa Feyzi and her brother Danyal Rahmani. They are members of a justice-seeking family in the Kurdish city of Kamyaran in Kurdistan province.
Branch Three of the Investigation Office of the Kamyaran Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office is examining the case against the three detainees on charges of “membership of opposition groups abroad”.
The three detainees are known to be from a Dadkhah family, a term used for families of victims seeking truth and justice.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned that the investigative office had summoned the three detainees and formally notified them of their detention extension.
Isa Feyzi and Danyal Rahmani have remained in solitary confinement cells in Kamyaran Prison, while Kajal Rahmani is held in solitary confinement in the women’s ward of the Juvenile Detention Centre in the city of Sanandaj, the capital of Kurdistan province.
The three detainees have had no access to legal representation or family phone calls since their arrest, and each was allowed one family visit in the presence of prison officers.
On 29 June, Isa Feyzi and Danyal Rahmani told their visiting family that interrogators from the Intelligence Ministry’s office in Kamyaran had subjected them to physical and psychological torture to extract forced and false confessions from them.
Families of the detainees went to the local court to lodge a complaint against the security interrogators, but the judicial authorities have so far refused to investigate the torture allegations. Prison officials have also refused to register the complaints of the two detainees.
On 6 June, security forces of the Ministry of Intelligence arrested Kajal Rahmani and her brother Danyal Rahmani in a raid on their family homes in Kamyaran.
Isa Feyzi, Kajal Rahmani’s husband, was arrested later on the same day when he went to the Ministry of Intelligence’s office in Kamyaran to ask about the fate of his detained wife.
Kajal Rahmani staged an 18-day hunger strike after her arrest to protest against her unlawful detention and against degrading treatment by security forces and pressure from interrogators to build a case against her.
Kajal and Danyal Rahmani are known to be from a justice-seeking family. Their brother, Jamal Rahmani, a member of the leadership council of the Democratic and Free Society of East Kurdistan (KODAR), was killed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in 2018.
The family has repeatedly approached Iranian government authorities in Kamyaran and Sanandaj in recent years to request the return of his body or information about his burial place, but they have so far received no response.
Another brother, Rebin Rahmani, is a former political prisoner and one of the directors of KHRN.
