Three members of a justice-seeking family, Kajal Rahmani, her husband Isa Feyzi and her brother Danyal Rahmani, have been temporarily released on bail after 43 days in detention.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned that the three Kurdish activists were released from Kamyaran Prison and Sanandaj Women’s Prison on 19 July, each on bail of 20 billion rials.
During their detention, they were charged with “membership of opposition groups abroad” and denied access to legal representation.
Their release comes as the judicial authorities in Kamyaran continue to refuse to investigate allegations that Ministry of Intelligence interrogators tortured Feyzi and Danyal Rahmani at the ministry’s detention facility in the city.
According to the Rahmani family, Danyal Rahmani began a hunger strike during the first days of his detention and was subjected to severe physical torture with batons and wooden sticks for a week to extract forced confessions.
After a week, he and Feyzi were transferred to solitary confinement in Kamyaran Prison. However, they were repeatedly returned to the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention facility for interrogation and subjected to further torture.
The family said prison officials refused to document the men’s physical condition despite visible signs of torture on their bodies.
Ministry of Intelligence forces arrested Kajal and Danyal Rahmani on 6 June after raiding their family homes in Kamyaran.
Feyzi was arrested later that day when he went to the Ministry of Intelligence’s office in Kamyaran to ask about his detained wife.
After being held for one day in solitary confinement at the ministry’s detention facility in Kamyaran, Kajal Rahmani was transferred to the women’s ward of the Juvenile Detention Centre in Sanandaj.
She staged an 18-day hunger strike in protest at her unlawful detention, degrading treatment by security forces and pressure from interrogators to build a case against her.
Kajal and Danyal Rahmani’s brother, Jamal Rahmani, a member of the leadership council of the Democratic and Free Society of East Kurdistan (KODAR), was killed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in 2018.
The family has repeatedly approached Iranian government authorities in Kamyaran and Sanandaj in recent years to request the return of his body or information about his burial place, but they have so far received no response.
Another brother, Rebin Rahmani, is a former political prisoner and one of the directors of KHRN.
