The ex-husband of a woman prisoner on temporary leave has thrown acid at her on a street in Mashhad, northeast Iran, causing severe injuries to her face and body.

Reportedly, the assailant has been taken into custody.

“About two weeks ago, Reyhaneh Rahmani was sent on leave from ward 1 of the Mashhad Women’s Prison, but her ex-husband threw acid on her face on one of the city’s streets”, said a source in an interview with the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN).

The source added that the victim’s ears were completely damaged and she is not able to move her body.

Two weeks after she was admitted to the hospital, doctors say there is still a risk of death.

In recent days, she was returned to prison in a critical physical condition as her temporary leave had come to an end. However, after two days in the prison’s infirmary, prison officials were forced to extend her temporary leave and transfer her back to the hospital.

Rahmani, 24, has been detained in Mashhad prison for 20 months. After several years of marriage, she separated from her ex-husband and had a three-year-old child.

She later married another man addicted to drugs, who killed her child as a result of a drug overdose.

The court arrested Rahmani on charges of “aiding and abetting in the murder” and sentenced her to two years in prison.
