A woman prisoner named Aazam Pakdel has lost her life on 24 July as a result of being denied access to medical services in the women’s prison of Mashhad, Razavi Khorasan province.
The prisoner has been suffering from stomach cancer for the past two years and despite the advice of doctors, she was denied being sent to the hospital for continuous treatment.
On 23 July, Pakdel was transferred from ward 2 to the prison infirmary due to her deteriorating health. She was returned to the ward without any treatment, upon the orders of the infirmary staff.
On 24 July, the prisoner was taken to the prison infirmary again after having fainted but lost her life before reaching the hospital.
Pakdel, 40, was arrested about two years ago on “drug-related” charges and sentenced to six years in prison.
