Prisoners Saeid Najafi and Borzou Cheghazardi, sentenced to death for “premeditated murder”, were executed in Kermanshah Central Prison (also known as Dizel Abad Prison) on 17 May.

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned that the two prisoners were executed without the knowledge of their families.

Only after their executions did the prison authorities contact their families to inform them.

Najafi, 28, from Sahneh, Kermanshah Province, was arrested along with several other civilians about five years ago in a complex court case for “premeditated murder”.

He was forced to “confess” to the murder under severe physical torture by the Criminal Investigation Department and was eventually sentenced to death for “premeditated murder” under the Islamic law of qisas, or retribution-in-kind, which gives the victim’s family the right to retaliate.

Cheghazardi, 45, a father of three and resident of Mahidasht in Kermanshah province, was arrested several years ago on charges of “premeditated murder” and also sentenced to death under qisas.
