In the past week, the body of a middle-aged woman murdered by her own brother in an honour killing was found by the villagers near the village of Bobaktan of Saqez.
According to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, the dead body was identified as a 45-year-old woman called “Korteh” residing in Bobaktan village of Saqez. She was murdered by her brother in honour killing. His brother is a resident of Goyzeh near Bobaktan.
Local sources reported that the woman has been murdered after being tortured severely by her brother who is a Mumsta.
In many parts of the world, such a brutal and premeditated slaying is called “honour killing instead of murder.” The perpetrators can be husbands, fathers, brothers, uncles or sons. The United Nations reports 5,000 killings under the pretext of honour killing committed each year worldwide but women’s rights workers believe the real number to be around four times higher.
The term “honour killing” stems from the belief that a family’s honour depends on the sexual purity of its female members. While murder is punishable by life imprisonment or execution, there is no minimum charge for honour crimes in Iran penal codes.
