Ayda Amouei, an athlete and civil rights activist from Sanandaj, Kurdistan Province, had received threatening phone calls from agents of the Ministry of Intelligence prior to her arrest.

Arrest

Amouei was arrested by Ministry of Intelligence forces outside her sports club in Sanandaj on 18 January 2025.

Defendant’s Rights

She was arrested without a warrant and was denied family visits and access to legal representation during her detention.

Current Status

After 17 days in detention, Amouei was provisionally released from the women’s ward of the Juvenile Detention Centre in Sanandaj on bail of 60 billion rials (nearly 70,000 USD).
