Karim Asghari, a former political prisoner and the brother-in-law of Verisheh Moradi (Wirishe Moradi), a Kurdish political prisoner on death row, was previously arrested in autumn 2018 by the Intelligence Organisation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), along with his wife, Mehraneh Moradi.

Asghari and his wife were provisionally released on bail after spending several months in custody.

Arrest

Asghari was beaten and arrested by Ministry of Intelligence agents in Shuyesheh, in Sanandaj County, Kurdistan Province, on 8 June 2025.

Defendant’s Rights

He was arrested without a warrant and has since been denied family visits and access to legal representation.

Despite his family’s repeated attempts to obtain information about his fate, security and judicial authorities have refused to provide any clarification regarding his situation.

Current Status

Asghari is being held in the Ministry of Intelligence detention centre in Sanandaj.
