Arrest

Srwa Shiri, a Kurdish civilian from the village of Taraqeh in Bukan, West Azerbaijan Province, was arrested without a warrant by the Ministry of Intelligence together with her brother Peyman Shiri in the village on 25 September 2024.

After her arrest, she was taken to the Ministry’s detention facility in Orumiyeh, West Azerbaijan Province, and provisionally released on bail after several weeks.

She was denied family visits and access to legal representation during her detention.

Judicial Process

In November 2024, Branch 101 of the Second Criminal Court of Bukan was sentenced her to eight months in prison on charges of “propaganda against the state in favour of one of the opposition parties”.

Current Status

Shiri was sent to the women’s ward of Orumiyeh Central Prison on 6 January 2025 to serve her sentence.

1. Article 500 of the Islamic Penal Code: “Anyone who engages in propaganda activities against the Islamic Republic of Iran or in favour of groups and organisations opposing the state, in any manner, shall be sentenced to imprisonment for a period of three months to one year.”
