The Kurdistan Human Rights Network’s (KHRN) recent investigations have revealed numerous cases of human rights violations against Kurdish civilians and activists from Iran in July 2023.
Our Documentation and Statistics Centre has compiled a comprehensive report on the various violations perpetrated against these individuals, which we present in this monthly report.
Executions
According to these findings, Iran executed at least 12 prisoners over the past month in Orumiyeh, Kermanshah, Naqadeh, Karaj and Hamadan.
While four prisoners were executed on charges of “premeditated murder”, eight were executed for drug-related offences.
These are the executions of which the KHRN has been informed by its sources. However, the number of those executed is likely to be higher.
Femicide
On 7 July, Zilan Ayvaz, a 15-year-old girl, was shot and killed by her father, Abdolsalam Ayvaz, in the village of Ziveh in Piranshahr, West Azerbaijan province.
Also, on 13 July, Raheleh Rahdar was killed by her parents, on the grounds of “honour” in the Razi village of Khoy, West Azerbaijan province. After killing her, her parents claimed that she had committed suicide.
Kolbars and tradesmen
In July, at least 14 kolbars were shot by Iranian border guards in the country’s western border areas. Of these, one was killed and 13 were injured.
In addition, one kolbar was beaten by border forces and one was injured falling from a height.
Also, a 23-year-old tradesman lost his life on 23 July after falling from a height in the Qandil border of Sardasht, West Azerbaijan province.
Landmine explosions
On 24 July, a civilian, Seyyed Keyvan Seyyedpouri, was injured in a landmine explosion near an empty military base in the Garochaveh village of Piranshahr, West Azerbaijan province.
Civilians killed, injured, tortured
Over the past months Iranian military forces shot dead three civilians in Kermanshah, Kermanshah province; Salmas, West Azerbaijan province; and the Kani Pasha village in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
In addition, at least four civilians were injured after they were shot by security or police forces in Paveh, Kermanshah province, and Takab, West Azerbaijan province.
Also, in the first half of July, two civilians were tortured to death in custody of the Ministry of Intelligence in Orumiyeh, West Azerbaijan province.
Workers
On 17 July, a worker died after falling from a building in Marivan, Kurdistan province.
Another worker, Heidar Mohseni, committed suicide on 26 July after he was dismissed from his job at the Chovar Petrochemical Company in Ilam.
Detentions and arrests
Throughout July, Iranian forces arrested at least 75 civilians, including activists, a journalist, an imam and a 14-year-old child.
One of these civilians was detained to serve a three-year prison sentence in Kermanshah, Kermanshah province.
Prison sentences
Over the past month, Iranian courts have sentenced at least 17 people, mainly labour activists and relatives of victims of last year’s anti-government protests, to prison terms ranging from three months to 15 years.
At least 13 of these sentences were handed down by Branch One of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Sanandaj, Kurdistan Province.
Assassinations
In the first two weeks of July, agents of the Islamic Republic of Iran assassinated Adel Mohajer, Loghman Aji and Siamand Shaboyi, three members of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI), in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
