Civilian Sajjad Moradivandan has been on a hunger strike since 14 March and has sewn his lips shut to protest against his continued detention.

Moradivandan was arrested two months ago and has been demanding his release ever since.

Despite his critical health condition, the Ilam prison and court authorities have ignored his requests for release so far.

The civilian had left Abdanan due to fear of arrest and had been living in secret for several months. However, on 31 January, he was arrested by security forces in Masjed Soleyman, Khuzestan province.

After his arrest, he was transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence detention centre in Ilam, where he was subjected to severe physical and psychological torture for forced “confessions”, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned.

One of his teeth was broken during interrogation as a result of torture.

After several weeks of interrogation, he was transferred to the temporary detention centre of Ilam Central Prison.

The Ilam and Abdanan courts have, so far, refused to convert his arrest order into a bail order due to pressure from the intelligence ministry.
