Kurdish political prisoner Omar Faghihpour has been released from Orumiyeh Central Prison after serving more than 20 years of imprisonment.

Faghihpour has been released in the 21st year of his imprisonment, after the announcement of amnesty and release of a number of Kurdish political prisoners, sources told the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN).

The political prisoner spent his imprisonment in Mahabad, Rajai Shahr, and Orumiyeh prisons, during which he was denied of his right to temporary leave and parole.

Faghihpour, who comes from Bukan, was arrested by forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in one of the villages of Piranshahr on 31 August 2000, along with Khaled Fereydouni, a resident of Piranshahr. The two men were sentenced to death penalty by the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Mahabad on charges of “enmity against God”, which was later commuted to life sentence in 2005 in the Court of Appeals of Orumiyeh.

In 2004, the two political prisoners were internally exiled to Orumiyeh Central Prison and in 2007 they were transferred to serve nearly 10 years in Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj. In 2014, they were returned to Orumiyeh Central Prison.

Khaled Fereydouni is still held in prison and is denied the right to temporary leave and parole.
