Kurdish political activist Zhila Hojabri was recently sent to the Juvenile Detention Centre of Sanandaj, Kurdistan Province, to begin serving her three year and eight month sentence.

Hojabri, from Marivan, Kurdistan Province, was arrested in August 2023 by security forces in Bukan, West Azerbaijan Province, and after undergoing several weeks of interrogation at a security detention centre in Orumiyeh, West Azerbaijan Province, she was transferred to Orumiyeh Central Prison.

After spending a month in Orumiyeh Central Prison, Hojabri was transferred to the Juvenile Detention Centre of Sanandaj. She was taken to the Ministry of Intelligence detention centre in Sanandaj for daily interrogations for several months.

After several months of detention, Hojabri was temporarily released on bail from the Sanandaj Juvenile Detention Centre.

In January 2023, Branch 101 of the Criminal Court of Bukan, West Azerbaijan Province, sentenced Hojabri to a total of seven years in prison on charges of “membership of opposition groups”, “propaganda activities against the state” and “insulting a government official”.

Under Article 134 of the Law on Consolidation of Sentences, only five years of the sentence were enforceable, which was reduced to three years and eight months on appeal.
