Mehdi Majidi, a Kurdish civilian from Bukan, West Azerbaijan Province, has been sentenced to a total of five years in prison by Branch 102 of the Criminal Court Two in Bukan.

According to the court’s verdict, which was delivered to Majidi in recent days, he was sentenced to three years in prison for “supporting the Zionist regime”, one year for “propaganda against the state”, and one year for “insulting the leadership”, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned.

Majidi has filed an appeal, and the case has been referred to the Court of Appeal of West Azerbaijan Province.

According to Article 134 of the Iranian Penal Code, the Law on Consolidation of Sentences, only the three-year sentence will be enforced if the verdict is upheld.

Majidi, 25, was arrested by security forces in Bukan on 6 November 2023 and taken to the Ministry of Intelligence detention centre in Orumiyeh, West Azerbaijan Province.

After 40 days of interrogation, he was transferred to Bukan prison and released on bail of 5 billion rials – nearly 10,000 USD – after about three months.
