“Azad (Jafar) Saeedi, a prisoner sentenced to 25 years in prison, has been on a hunger strike since Monday, June 8, 2020, in protest to the suspension of his furlough and the strict measures  taken by the chief of Bukan Prison” an informed source told the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN).

He was beaten last week along with three other prisoners by Habib Mohammadi, Prison’s Chief, who also stopped granting furlough to the prisoners of ward 2 (correctional ward) of this prison.

According to the source, the family of a number of prisoners informed the media about the prisoners being beaten in this prison whose chief refused to grant furlough to prisoners of Ward 2 following the media covering the news of beatings.

Azad Saeedi, a civilian of Bukan, was arrested about six years ago on charges of “transporting and storing drugs” and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The prisoner has been released on bail 13 times in the past few years.

Following the publication of a report by KHRN regarding the beating of a number of prisoners by the chief of Bukan Prison, on June 6, four prisoners named Mehran Jafari, Ayub Asadi, Amanullah Qashndi and Azad Saeedi were transferred on the orders of the head of the prison to Ward 2 and beaten with an electric baton. Prison officials also shaved their heads to punish them.
