Hemen Mostafaei, a Kurdish prisoner on death row, has been transferred to solitary confinement in Sanandaj Central Prison to serve his sentence.

Hemen Mostafaei, born in 1989 and a resident of “Kani Dinar” in Marivan, was arrested on March 1, 2013, for the murder of a former member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) named Ebrahim Mohammadi in Marivan and transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence detention centre in Sanandaj.

Mostafaei was arrested by intelligence officers four days after the murder of the said member of IRGC on March 11 in Marivan. He was transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence detention centre in Sanandaj.  Mostafaei, who was seriously tortured during interrogation took the responsibility for the killing of the retired employee of IRGC. He agreed to make a TV confession in Press TV under threats and pressure of the Ministry of Intelligence despite the fact that the whole case was a scenario alleged by the interrogators.

According to an informed source, three other civilians of Marivan named “Beyan Kakei”, “Hiwa Dadafarin” and “Khalil Shirzadi” have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder in this case. Press TV has broadcasted a documentary called “Collaboration” about the forced confession of these four prisoners.Hemen was a member of the Kurdish party for a very short time before his arrest. He returned to Marivan after coordination with the Ministry of Intelligence upon repenting and expressing remorse. His previous experience has led the Marivan and Sanandaj Intelligence Office to allege that he and the Kurdish parties had political motives to murder the former employee of the IRGC.

The source further added that the Penal Court of Sanandaj had sentenced Mostafaei to death for murder and four years prison on charges of possession of weapons. Although the Ministry of Intelligence and the IRGC had filed an indictment for Moharebeh (commonly translated as “enmity against God”) against him at the Revolutionary Court, the Supreme Court closed the case for lack of evidence. Currently, he is charged with murder for which he has been sentenced to execution.

The prisoner had previously been transferred to solitary confinement on May 23, 2017, to serve his death sentence, but members of Mostafaei’s family and human rights activists gathered outside the prison gates to demand a halt to his execution. After several hours of gathering in front of the prison gates, the sentence was temporarily halted with the consent of the victim’s family.
