Kurdish civil rights activist Sakar Eini has contracted Covid-19 and has been taken to a cell in the safe ward of Orumiyeh Central Prison on 14 June.

Eini was transferred to Orumiyeh Central Prison on 1 June after being held in the detention centre of the Intelligence Organisation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for nearly five months.

A source close to the activist’s family spoke to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) and said: “Sakar Eini was transferred from the detention centre of the Intelligence Organisation of the IRGC to the quarantine ward of the prison on 1 June. After being held in quarantine for 10 days, he was tested for Covid-19 in order to be taken to an ordinary prison ward. The test results showed that he had contracted the coronavirus.”

According to the source, Eini was transferred from the quarantine ward of the prison to one of the cells in the safe ward of the prison, which is intended for holding prisoners contracted Covid-19.

Forces of the Intelligence Organisation of the IRGC arrested the activist on 9 January in Tehran, during the wave of arrests of Kurdish activists at the beginning of the year. They transferred him to the detention centre of the Intelligence Organisation of the IRGC in the al-Mahdi base in Orumiyeh.

The Intelligence Organisation of the IRGC and the Ministry of Intelligence arrested more than 120 people during the wave of arrests of Kurdish civilians and activists in various cities in January and February.

Despite the provisional release of some of these individuals on bail, a number of others remain in pre-trial detention for more than five months.
