A prisoner named Ebrahim Jowhari lost his life due to being denied access to medical services in Ilam Central Prison on 11 February.

Jowhari, 55-years-old from Iran’s western province of Ilam, was transferred to the prison infirmary due to his deteriorating health at 02:00 local time on 11 February.

Despite his health issues, medical officials refused to send him to the hospital and returned him to the prison ward two hours later.

The prisoner, who was suffering from hyperlipidemia, lost his life two hours later while being taken to the infirmary again.

His body was transferred to the department of forensic medicine in the city of Ilam. The reason for his death has not been announced yet.

Jowhari, from Ilam, was in Ilam Central Prison for about three years due to his inability to pay “mahrieh” – a payment to be made to the bride if a marriage breaks down.

Earlier, on 1 December 2021, another prisoner named Ruhollah Maleki lost his life in the same prison due to the negligence of prison officials to his deteriorating health condition after he committed suicide.
