The strike of 45 prisoners of conscience refusing prison food to protest against their transfer to a newly-built high-security ward in Iran’s northwestern Orumiyeh, has turned into a hunger strike.

The prisoners went on a strike on 12 December. Today is the fifth day that they have converted it into a hunger strike.

Prison infirmary doctors measured the blood pressure of all the prisoners after some of the blood pressure’s of some dropped due to the strike.

Some of these prisoners with a history of illness were reported to be in poor health condition.

Also, Khaled Fereydoni, one of the striking political prisoners who was protesting against the rejection of his request for release or temporary leave, was transferred to solitary confinement on the orders of prison officials on 19 December.

With the transfer of prisoners to the new ward, all their communication with other prison wards will be cut off.

Additionally, the new ward will have a smaller area and fewer services and facilities than the other wards.

It has been built next to the ward for prisoners carrying out penal labour and on the area of the prison’s main bath on two floors; one floor for the prisoners of the military court and the ground floor for political and religious prisoners.
