Omid Ghadimi, the brother of Foad Ghadimi, a protester killed during the Women, Life, Freedom uprising in Divandarreh, Kurdistan Province, has been sentenced to a total of 40 months in prison and a fine of 85 million rials – nearly 150 USD.

The Islamic Revolutionary Court in Divandarreh charged Ghadimi with “membership of the Komala [Party of Iranian Kurdistan]”, “propaganda activities against the state”, and “spreading falsehoods to disturb public opinion”.

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned that Ghadimi’s trial took place without legal representation at the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Divandarreh on 20 December. The verdict was then delivered to him in writing in mid-March.

The issued verdict stated that Ghadimi was sentenced to 32 months in prison for “membership of the Komala Party”, eight months of imprisonment for “propaganda activities against the state”, and a fine of 85 million rials for “spreading falsehoods to disturb public opinion”.

Under Article 134 of the Law on Consolidation of Sentences, 32 months of Ghadimi’s sentence will be implemented. The court also suspended the execution of two-thirds of this sentence for one year.

Ghadimi was arrested on 7 September 2023 by the Ministry of Intelligence on a street in Divandarreh and taken to the ministry’s detention centre in the city.

After 20 days of interrogation in this security detention centre, Ghadimi was provisionally released on bail of 23 billion rials – nearly 38,000 USD.

Foad Ghadimi, a 39-year-old father of two children, was injured by gunfire from the military-security forces during the anti-government Women, Life, Freedom uprising in Divandarreh on 19 September 2022 and died after two days of hospitalisation in Kowsar Hospital in Sanandaj, Kurdistan Province.
