Branch 4 of the Court of Appeals of Kurdistan province – headed by Judge Mostafa Tayari – has recently upheld the sentence of two years suspended imprisonment for Roya Jalali, a Kurdish woman environmental activist.

Branch 1 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Sanandaj, Kurdistan province – headed by Judge Saeedi – had sentenced the activist to two years suspended imprisonment.

The court had charged her with “membership in the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK)”.

On 2 February, security forces arrested Jalali at her house in Sanandaj.

Reportedly, security forces resorted to violence during her arrest and insulted her and her family members.

Jalali was released on bail of 100 million Iranian Tomans – nearly 4,000 USD – on 3 March.

She is a member of the Green Society of Kurdistan.

Additionally, in June, Branch 1 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Sanandaj sentenced Jalali’s husband, Khabat Mafakheri, to four years of suspended imprisonment.

It charged him, too, with “membership in the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK)”.

After the verdict was issued, Mafakheri was arrested again by security forces at his family home on 10 August and was released on bail from Sanandaj Central Prison after 11 days.
