Authorities in Orumiyeh prison have secretly executed a Kurdish political prisoner named Firouz Musalou on 20 June without informing his lawyer and family.
The political prisoner was transferred from solitary confinement to an unknown location on 19 June to serve his sentence.
Fars News Agency also published a report on the evening of 20 June quoting the public relations of the judiciary of West Azerbaijan province, without mentioning the identity of the political prisoner.
The agency said: “This person shot and killed two border guards of the Islamic Republic of Iran and injured three after targeting them. After a case was filed in the judiciary and a trial was carried out in the court, an indictment was issued and subsequently, a death sentence was given. The sentence was upheld in the Supreme Court and the execution was carried out.”
After 33 months in temporary detention, in March 2022, Branch 2 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Orumiyeh sentenced Musalou to the death penalty on charges of “armed insurrection” (baghi) through membership in the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
Musalou had received a letter of safe conduct from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) after several years of membership in the PKK and presented himself to the IRGC office in Sardasht, West Azerbaijan province, on 11 July 2019.
The IRGC officials had told his family that their son would be released after a few days of interrogation, but he was transferred to the detention facility of the Intelligence Organisation of the IRGC in Orumiyeh, interrogated and tortured.
On 1 January 2020, after five months and 20 days of interrogation in the detention centre of the Intelligence Organisation of the IRGC, he was imprisoned in Orumiyeh Central Prison.
Musalou comes from the Qatur district of Khoy, West Azerbaijan province.
