The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has detained Mohammad Birdal, a Kurdish civilian from Turkey and a member of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Agri, eastern Turkey, two months ago.

Since his detention, he has been deprived of the right to contact his family and request a lawyer.

On 23 August, the Intelligence Organisation of the IRGC detained Birdal on his return from a business trip in Iran at the Bazargan border crossing in West Azerbaijan province.

They took the civilian to the detention centre of the Intelligence Organisation of the IRGC in Orumiyeh, West Azerbaijan province.

After interrogation, he was transferred to the quarantine ward of Orumiyeh Central Prison on 16 October.

The Kurdish political activist has been charged with “membership in the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).”
