Kurdish political prisoner Khaled Fereydouni has been sent on temporary leave on 16 January, for the first time in 22 years of his imprisonment.

Fereydouni spent his imprisonment in the prisons of Mahabad and Orumiyeh in West Azerbaijan province, and Rajai Shahr in Karaj province.

During his imprisonment, the political prisoner was denied the right to parole and temporary leave.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) arrested Fereydouni, along with Omar Faqihpour, in one of the villages of Piranshahr in West Azerbaijan province, on 31 August 2000.

The Islamic Revolutionary Court of Mahabad sentenced the two to the death penalty on charges of “enmity against God” (moharebeh).

In 2005, the Court of Appeals of West Azerbaijan province commuted their death penalties to life sentences.

In 2004, the two political prisoners were internally exiled to Orumiyeh Central Prison and in 2007 they were transferred to serve nearly 10 years in Rajai Shahr Prison. In 2014, they were returned to Orumiyeh Central Prison.

Earlier, in April 2021, Faqihpour was released from Orumiyeh Central Prison after serving more than 20 years.
