Security forces raided the home of Kurdish Sunni cleric Mohammad Sharifi in Bukan, West Azerbaijan Province, arresting him without a warrant on 27 August.

Sources indicate that during the operation, officers forced their way into the cleric’s home, breaking doors and windows in the process. They also confiscated his personal belongings.

Details of the charges brought against Sharifi and his current whereabouts remain unknown.

The incident follows a recent wave of summonses, arrests and convictions of Kurdish Sunni clerics who have shown support for the anti-government protests.

Since mid-March, the Special Clerical Court of Hamadan, Hamadan Province, and the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Mahabad, West Azerbaijan Province, have sentenced at least ten Kurdish Sunni clerics to imprisonment, exile, flogging and revocation of clerical status, all for speeches in support of the protests in Sanandaj, Saqqez, Dehgolan, Sarvabad, Piranshahr and Bukan.

The identities of these clerics are: Hossein Ali-Moradi, Saber Khoda-Moradi, Arman Sadeghi, Seyyed Jalal Akbari, Madeh Karami, Abdoljabbar Lotfi, Ebrahim Karimi Nanaleh, Loghman Amini, Zana Khoshaman, and Mohammad Sharifi.
