Law enforcement forces in Kermanshah have tortured to death Payam Abdi, a 35-year-old Kurdish man recently arrested in the city, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned.

On 9 January, a police officer informed Abdi’s family of his death and asked them to retrieve his body from the military hospital in Kermanshah.

When the family arrived, however, conflicting statements emerged, with law enforcement officials claiming that Abdi’s body had been found on a city street.

Contrary to this claim, Abdi’s relatives allege that he had been arrested several days earlier by law enforcement forces in Kermanshah and subsequently transferred to their detention centre.

Signs of torture, including injuries to the chest and head, were observed by the family at the Kermanshah Forensic Medicine Department.

The body of the Kurdish father of two was returned to his family on 10 January and buried in his home town of Nowsud, Kermanshah Province.
