Reza Babrnezhad, the brother of Mehdi Babrnezhad, a protester killed during the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising in Quchan, Razavi Khorasan Province, has been arrested for the second time in recent weeks.

Security forces arrested Babrnezhad in Quchan on 6 June, and took him to the city’s prison, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned.

This follows his temporary release on bail from the same prison on 2 June after 13 days in detention.

On 20 May, Babrnezhad was arrested during a raid on his family home by security forces after publishing a post on his personal Instagram page about the death of Ebrahim Raisi, Iran’s former president and a member of the “Death Committee” in the 1980s.

He was also previously arrested without a warrant on 11 August 2023, on the eve of Mehdi Babrnezhad’s birthday, when agents of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Intelligence Organisation raided his home. He was later released on bail following his interrogation.

Mehdi Babrnezhad, a 22-year-old Kurdish civilian from Quchan, was killed by security forces during the anti-government protests on 21 September 2022.

His body was returned to his family three days later after they signed a written undertaking. His burial took place in the village of Shah Rag in Quchan in the presence of a large number of security forces.
