Security forces arrested Vahid Chavaran, a mountaineer from the town of Sarabbagh in Iran’s western province of Ilam, as he attempted to leave the country on 23 June and took him to an undisclosed location.
In recent months, security forces have repeatedly raided Chavaran’s family home to arrest him in connection with the recent anti-government protests in Abdanan, Ilam province.
These attempts to arrest him were unsuccessful because he was not at home with his family.
The most recent raid took place on 15 February, when two of Chavaran’s sisters were hospitalised after security forces fired tear gas inside his family home.
