The Islamic Revolutionary Court of Sanandaj in Iran’s northwestern Kurdistan province has sentenced Kurdish activists Maryam Sadeghi and Armin Esperlous to one year suspended imprisonment, each.

Branch 1 of the court has charged the two activists with “propaganda against the state”.

Sadeghi’s trial was held in recent months and she has been informed of the sentence in the past few days.

She is a member of the Coordinating Committee for Assistance to the Establishment of Trade Unions.

On 23 October 2021, security forces detained the activist at her house in Sanandaj and took her to a security detention centre.

Reportedly, Sadeghi’s arrest took place after she attended the funeral of Asiyeh Azimi, mother of two Komalah fighters who had lost their lives.

She was released on bail after being interrogated for 12 days in the detention centre of the Ministry of Intelligence in Sanandaj.

Separately, the trial of the environmental activist Armin Esperlous was held on 12 December 2021 at Branch 1 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Sanandaj, presided over by Judge Saeidi.

He was officially notified of the verdict on 15 January.

Security forces had arrested the activist on 29 September 2021 in Sanandaj.

He was released 20 days later on 19 October 2021 on a bail of 150 million Iranian Tomans – nearly 6,000 USD.

Previously, on 21 February 2019, Esperlous was arrested during a mass arrest of environmental activists and members of the Kurdistan branch of the National Unity Party. He was released on bail two months later.

In March 2020, a court sentenced him to three months and one day in prison on charges of “acting against national security.”
