The Court of Appeals of Kurdistan province, northwestern Iran, has commuted the one-year prison sentence of a civilian named Azhin Rahmani to one year suspended imprisonment.

Previously, the Criminal Court of Baneh, Kurdistan province, had sentenced the Kurdish woman to one year in prison.

It had charged her with “acting against national security” through membership in the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI) and “illegally exiting the border”.

Following Rahmani’s appeal against the ruling, the case was referred to Branch 9 of the Court of Appeals of Kurdistan province, which commuted her sentence to one year suspended imprisonment.

Rahmani, 22, returned to Iran through the Baneh border in October 2021 after eight months of membership in the KDPI and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

Upon her return, she was detained by security forces at the border and released on bail after interrogation.
