A woman prisoner named Mozhgan Tanha lost her life on 4 September due to the delay of the medical staff of the women’s prison in Mashhad, Iran’s northeastern Razavi Khorasan province, in sending her to a hospital outside the prison.

The prisoner was taken to the prison infirmary due to losing consciousness.

Tanha, 42, was reportedly arrested on drug-related charges and taken to the women’s prison in Mashhad on 4 September.

The prison health authorities have announced the cause of the prisoner’s death as “opening of the swallowed drug package in her digestive system”.

The prisoner’s body was transferred to the Department of Forensic Medicine in Mashhad on 5 September.
