A prisoner named Milad Karimi, who has been serving his three-year sentence in Orumiyeh Central Prison, went on a hunger strike on 31 August in protest against the filing of a new case and the issuance of a new verdict against him.
On 1 September, the prison officials met with him in ward 2 and asked him to end his hunger strike.
The prison authorities have threatened Karimi that if the hunger strike continues, they will transfer him to solitary confinement.
Karimi, 30, who comes from Kermanshah and is a resident of Karaj, has been serving his sentence in Orumiyeh for about three years on charges of “robbery”.
During this period, Branch 102 of the Fardis Second Criminal Court in Karaj sentenced him to three and a half years of imprisonment and payment of 2 billion Iranian Tomans – nearly 62,500 USD – in restitution to a private plaintiff in a new judicial case on similar charges.
Prior to the issuance of this verdict, Karimi never received any warning or summons from the Fardis Court in Karaj regarding the case and had been transferred only to Branch 106 of Orumiyeh Criminal Court twice.
While rejecting this sentence, the prisoner views its issuance to be unfair without the presence of witnesses and himself and has gone on a hunger strike to protest against it.
