Sayyad Darvishi, the brother of Farjad Darvishi, the protester killed by Iranian forces during the anti-government uprising of Women, Life, Freedom in Orumiyeh, West Azerbaijan Province, has been sent to Orumiyeh Central Prison to serve an eight-month sentence.

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned that Darvishi was arrested after being summoned by the Orumiyeh Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in recent days.

Darvishi was sentenced to eight months in prison in recent months by the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Orumiyeh on charges of “propaganda against the state”.

He was initially arrested by the Ministry of Intelligence in Orumiyeh on 2 November 2023 and taken to the ministry’s detention centre in the city, where he was subjected to physical and psychological torture for two months in order to extract a confession.

The civilian was then transferred to Orumiyeh Central Prison and released on 31 December 2023, after posting a bail of 10 billion rials (nearly 25,000 USD).

Throughout his detention, Darvishi was denied access to legal representation, family visits, and telephone contact.

His brother, Farjad Darvishi, a 23-year-old Kurdish man from the village of Balou in Orumiyeh, was shot dead by security forces on 20 September 2022, during anti-government protests in the Vali-e Asr neighbourhood of Orumiyeh.

On the first anniversary of Farjad’s death, on 20 September 2023, security forces blocked a memorial gathering in Balou village, threatening Darvishi’s family with arrest.
