Kurdish civil rights activist Zahra Mohammadi was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Sanandaj on charges of “forming a group and a population with the aim of disrupting national security.“
Her trial was held on February 17 at the Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Sanandah, presided over by Judge Saeedi, and her lawyer was notified of the 10-year prison sentence yesterday.
Zahra Mohammadi is the director of the Nojin Cultural-Social association, and her activities include teaching Kurdish language and literature and other civil activities. She was arrested by the security forces in Sanandaj on June May 23, 2019, and was released on Dec 2, 2019, on a bail of 700 million Tomans.
On Nov 13, 2019, Amnesty International called for the immediate release of Zahra Mohammadi’s unconditional “arbitrary” release.
The call stated that security interrogators had threatened the civil activist with arresting her family members if they did not cooperate with them. It should be noted that she was denied access to medication despite her gastrointestinal problems at the time of her arrest.
Nojin Socio-cultural Association is a civil institution established under an official license granted by the Interior Ministry. This association has been holding Kurdish Language Courses at various Kurdish cities during the past several years. It is noteworthy that this institution has played an important role in the provision of relief services to the earthquake-stricken people in Lorestan during the past several months.
