There is no information on the fate of Kamal Lotfi, the detained father of one of the victims of the recent anti-government protests in Dehgolan, Kurdistan province.

Since his arrest in Dehgolan on 16 April, Lotfi has been denied access to a lawyer and family visits. The charges against him also remain unknown.

Lotfi’s son, Reza Lotfi, was killed by special forces during the protests in Dehgolan on 19 September 2022.

The detained father was reportedly transferred to Kamyaran Prison at the end of April after initial interrogations at the Ministry of Intelligence detention centre in Sanandaj, Kurdistan province.

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned that Lotfi’s family has repeatedly visited judicial and security institutions in the cities of Dehgolan, Sanandaj and Kamyaran, but has received no information about the fate of the detained civilian.

The authorities at Kamyaran prison also denied reports that Lotfi had been transferred to the prison.

After their son was killed, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) threatened and pressured the family to give a television interview blaming the Kurdish opposition for their son’s death.

As the pressure continued, the father released a video announcing that his son had been shot by the military forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
